D.C. Council Passes Wage Transparency Bill

On December 19, 2023, the D.C. council passed the Wage Transparency Omnibus Amendment Act of 2023, an amendment to the Wage Transparency Act of 2014. The bill requires private employers to provide prospective employees with a pay scale and schedule of benefits for advertised positions. Employers are now mandated to provide prospective employees with a notice of their rights under the new bill.

Furthermore, the bill prohibits employers from seeking prospective employees’ wage history and/or screening prospective employees based on their wage history. The new regulations are intended to promote wage transparency in job recruitment processes. Councilmember Christina Henderson stated that the bill is also geared toward addressing gender inequities. The bill is set to undergo mayoral and congressional review before taking effect on June 30, 2024.
