On November 11, 2023, Correia & Puth Partner Subhashini Bollini presented on a panel titled “From Inclusion to Belonging in the Legal Profession (Elimination of Bias in the Profession)” at the American Bar Association’s Labor & Employment Law Conference in Seattle, Washington. Ms. Bollini was joined on the panel by Hon John A. Henderson, an Administrative Law Judge with the U.S. Department of Justice, Scott Kelly, a Shareholder with Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C, Alfredo Sergio, Head of Employment and Labor Law for Roche Diagnostics Corporation, and Brenda Suttonwills, Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives at UCLA School of Law.
The panel examined various positions on workplace implicit bias programs as well as practical approaches and potential challenges to addressing implicit bias through diversity programs. Ms. Bollini spoke about the limitations of implicit bias as a framework for understanding workplace discrimination, touching on Professor of Law and Founding Director of the Center for WorkLife Law, Joan Williams’ research regarding how implicit bias is experienced in the workplace.
